Davina McCall on The Million Pound Drop

Davina McCall on The Million Pound Drop
Ever since introducing Big Brother from its inception in 2000, Davina McCall has been the Channel 4 go-to face for live shows. She's personable, pretty and very confident, so can be relied on to do it right, night after night. And night after night IS right - The Million Pound Drop seems to be on every weekend night you find yourself staying in and wanting a bit of mindless banter.

Oh, and it's also a general knowledge quiz, though these questions won't really tax a brain of Britain any time soon. Basically, you need to watch telly and read the tabloids to ensure you can answer most of the questions. By the time you get to the last question though, it's a 50/50 gamble, so unless you're just mad keen on getting on the box, don't bother entering with any real hope of taking a substantial sum home with you. A million pounds is just an iconic figure in any game show, and who doesn't want to be a millionaire?

Basically, a million pounds enters the scene with a whole load of pzazz and palaver - security 'heavies' bring in wads of money amounting to £1 million, and as the questions count down, the money placed on incorrect answers (there are four possibilities, which gets down to two) drops down through trap doors, never to be seen again. Oh OK, that's an exaggeration (what, me?) Actually, it's rounded up and brought back for the next round.

Contestants answer questions in pairs, and this gives quite a lot of potential for dramatic tension and emotional upheaval. Brothers and sisters, lovers, parents and offspring - this guarantees a back story right there. Sometimes they're even famous. If they can only disagree about the answers, then what fun! All that money at stake, and we can sit at home and watch it all fall down, just like ring a ring a roses. The stinker of a question at the end guarantees that even if there's a million pounds still standing (ha!) - chances are it's for the chop. Or the drop.

It's all really good fun though! Well, erm, not really. It's kind of repetitive, puerile and dead dull, but still. There's just something about it, and you want to watch it, even if it's only so you can find out about the names of Downing Street cats or famous talking dogs. Well OK - not talking dogs. There will be a question about one some day though. Take my word for it. Woof!!
